Student Accommodation- The most broken place ever!
One thing I’ve learnt about Student Accommodation is that everything is eventually doomed to break down. Whether it’s in your own room, the kitchen or even the hallways, nothing is safe from the inevitability of breaking down. It certainly doesn’t help that the general wear and tear is accelerated by students learning how to use these new contraptions or their drunken escapades lead to the destruction of this temporary home.
When I moved into my halls of residence (Harry Law Hall) the first thing my family and I learned upon arriving was that the elevator was out of service. Whilst this may come as a surprise to you ,they had a fix for this, getting paid workers to carry peoples things upstairs. However, this was a temporary fix; the elevator continued to be out of service for the next three weeks, and needless to say, it was inconvenient. It made it difficult to bring food shops upstairs (which was especially difficult for me, who is on the fourth floor of the building) .At least I got my cardio in whenever I bought food.
The issue didn’t just extend to food shops, it also affected laundry as every time you would sort a wash or dry out, you would have to battle the stairs to get a heavy bag of clothes to the laundrette or your room. To be honest it made having the elevator now feel like such a luxury, saving time and my depleting sanity. Most others along my corridor echoed this sigh of relief when the eternal tourture was over.
At least something had reduced some of the pain of living here.
However it didn’t get much better, especially for the kitchen next to mine who’s oven broke and wasn’t replaced for over a long, grueling month. This led them needing to use our oven to cook anything other than the student special, the microwave meal. This again became a short term solution as our kitchen soon met it’s fate. The oven started leaking. I know, compared to everything else, how could this be worse; our kitchen became a swamp. The issue I had with this was the amount of time it took to sort it, three days of continuous moping just to use our oven. It turned out that a pipe burst behind it, I don’t know how but I guess I’ll never know. There is something I do want to get off my chest however, i would like to thank my kitchen mate Sam who moped the leakage the most. A true hero.
I know I’ve complained a lot about Student Accommodation in this post but I would truly like to thank the opportunity my new home away from home has created for me. The chance to meet new people and make lifelong friendships. To end this on sappy, I would say I’ve seized the opportunity.
Thanks for reading today’s post, I ranted a lot and I’m sure you could too. So if you like, you can comment about some housing situations you’ve experienced, tell me whether they have been positive or disastrous. Have a nice day.
